Flows of Complex Fluids: Fundamentals, Measurements, Understanding
Howard A. Stone, Complex fluid group, Princeton University
Many fluids are “non-Newtonian”: their flows may exhibit a shear-rate dependent viscosity, elastic effects, normal stress effects, etc. We offer some perspective on these flow problems, including discussion of 1) time derivatives that blends physical insight with mathematical simplicity, 2) the influence of system size on common measurement methods of the polymer relaxation time in extensional flow configurations, and 3) the “discrepancy” between experiments and simulations in steady pressure-driven flows of polymer solutions.
